As we know, personal development can be all about learning new skills or developing old ones to achieve your goal lifestyle. It is also typically focused on improving yourself in some way that benefits you directly (or potentially) for your life. These benefits could be self-confidence, improved social skills, healthier living, etc.
However, one of the overlooked areas of personal growth is what I like to call “self-care”. This includes activities such as reading, listening to music, doing exercises, grooming your hair and skin, and other things that make you feel good physically and emotionally.
Self-care is an important part of creating your own sense of well-being no matter what stage of life you are at. We oftentimes get so wrapped up in achieving the goals that we forget to take care of ourselves.
It is very possible that once you reach your goal, you will lose momentum and even struggle to find the motivation to keep moving forward. Setting time aside each week to do something that makes you happy is an easy way to fix this.
What does self-care mean?
Many people confuse self-care with wellness or health practices. These are good, but they are not the same thing as self-care.
Wellness includes activities such as practicing yoga, going to the gym, and eating foods rich in antioxidants. Health practices include brushing your teeth every day, sleeping eight hours per night, and exercising daily.
Self-care is also having routines that make you feel better about yourself. It can be doing something you have needed to do for a long time, like grooming yourself or taking a bath. It can be reading a book you have been wanting to read for years. Or it could be listening to music you have wanted to hear for a while.
It can be doing things that matter to you and that bring you joy. Being able to identify what matters to you and what doesn’t means we all get more done.
Shower or bath routine
Changing your shower, bath, or wash routine is a great way to do personal development. Adding in new products or changing the strength of an existing product can be fun ways to rev up your self-care routines.
Most people spend at least half an hour every day grooming themselves. Most of that time is spent under the shower or in the bathroom basin doing things like washing their hair, shaving, using deodorant, etc.
There are several reasons why having a good wash routine is important to take care of yourself. First, it helps you feel better about yourself by investing in quality products that help keep you looking your best. Second, it boosts your overall feeling of relaxation or calming down. And third, it helps ease stress as we all know how powerful our bodies are – they give us lots of messages.
A bad wash routine can also be a cause for concern if it doesn’t seem to work anymore. You may have run out of one ingredient, or something has dried up and you need to start over. Or maybe you just don’t like the way you look with this particular combination so you decide to try another one.
Whatever the reason, it’s totally normal to feel some motivation when you begin replacing what you were putting off.
Bedtime routine
After you get up in the morning, it is a good idea to have a pre-dawn workout or other activities like walking, swimming, or yoga before getting into bed. This helps reset your body for the day!
If sleeping well is a struggle, then start with making your bedroom calm and sleep-friendly. Use white noise machines to help drown out any noises that keep you awake. Invest in warm blankets to relax.
Towel off after showering is more efficient than using cold water which can wake you up in colder conditions. Letting your hair dry naturally can contribute as well.
Drinking some tea or hot watermelon can be helpful next steps. Try experimenting with different beverages and temperatures until you find one that works for you!
Self-care does not mean only looking after yourself physically, but also mentally and emotionally. Learning how to care for yourself will help you feel better and succeed in life.
Mood boards
A mood board is a collection of items that talk about, inspire, or make you feel an emotion. The artist uses these materials to create their own style, expression, and theme. They organize them into a coherent look that tells your story as an artist.
Mood boards are not limited to painting. You can use this technique in fashion design, photography, illustration, and more. It applies to anyone who wants to hone their artistic skills!
Making art is hard. It takes time and energy to produce something beautiful. Just because you’ve seen it done before does not mean you will succeed without practice.
Self-care is important so don’t hesitate to give yourself some respect and reward yourself for all the work you put into improving your art.
Take some time every day to do something you love that makes you happy. Invest in the things that matter to you and keep learning new things.
